Queer City:
LGBTQ + stories and spaces in Soho

This alternative queer walking tour explores queer place making in London’s pleasure district of Soho and the surrounding area of Piccadilly, focusing on lesbian, bisexual and trans identities.

We will explore how queer people have created spaces for community, friendship, sexual freedom and activism. We focus on several interesting individuals that have played with their sexuality and gender presentation throughout the last few centuries.

You'll walk away with plenty of interesting history, a bit of architectural knowledge, plenty of local anecdotes, and of course some recommendations for great bars in Soho.

Practicalities

Start and Finish

This walk is approximately 2 hours through the streets of Piccadilly and Soho. The walk starts at the Criterion Theatre next to Piccadilly Circus station and ends at Soho Square, close to Tottenham Court Road station, Dean Street entrance.

Toilets

Please bring water on hot days. Public toilets can be found at Waterstones on Piccadilly as well as in several cafes.

Accessibility

There are no steps on the walk, but there are some steep curbs. There is not a designated rest stop but approximately half way through the tour we will stop for slightly longer at an area with a bench.

I aim to make the walks as inclusive as possible so if you are worried about accessibility, please get in touch with further questions.

Dogs

Pet dogs are welcome as long as they are comfortable in busy environments and around other dogs.

“The tour was confidently led and well prepared. Imogen had a wealth of historical knowledge and also inserted interesting and sometimes funny anecdotes from contemporary London, which brought the topic of queer space neatly together”

— Marianna, Tour Participant
